Winter vs. summer

How can you tell the difference between winter tires and summer tires?

Winter tires that are approved for winter road conditions have the so-called Alpine symbol. For all winter tires, the Alpine symbol is mandatory. In addition, you can recognize this by the different tread properties. Summer tires are significantly harder than winter tires. The winter tire tread is characterized by sipes to prevent slipping on snow. Due to the soft tread compound, the winter tire is thus still flexible even at low temperatures, so that they remain grippy and adapt optimally to the road surface.

Tire labeling

How to read winter tires

Car tires from different manufacturers have different designations and imprints or symbols. That is why tires have a tire label. This provides information about various tire characteristics in the form of numbers, letters and symbols. Not only the tire marking provides information about your permissible wheel/tire combination, but also your vehicle documents. The inscriptions on the tire sidewall contain the most important data about the tire. And what do they mean?

How much tread must the winter tire have?

The minimum tread depth for tires is 1.6 millimeters. Since worn tires endanger the braking performance, we recommend checking the tread depth regularly. Our tires are available in quality A as well as quality B in different tread depths and manufacturing dates or even like new.

Quality A means:

✓ Age (DOT) up to 4 years.
✓ Tread depth as of 6.0 mm
✓ Tread condition: normal traces of use.

Quality B means:
✓ Age (DOT) up to 6 years
✓ Tread depth 4.0 to 5.9 mm
✓ Tread condition: normal wear marks

FAQ

All questions about our winter tires.

In Germany there is a situational winter tire obligation, according to which the tires must be adapted to the weather conditions. The rule of thumb is to change to winter tires from October to Easter. The condition of the road therefore determines whether you have to drive with winter tires or not. In principle, winter tires are compulsory in wintry weather conditions such as: black ice, snow, slush, ice and/or frost.

All tires have a legal minimum tread depth of 1.6 millimeters.
No, we do not buy wheels, tires or rims from private individuals.
The winter tire can wear out after about 6 to seven years. Sufficient tread depth and the age of the tire (DOT*) are decisive for the service life. However, life expectancy can be influenced by numerous factors such as: E.g.: driving style, driving performance, air pressure, tire model, storage or axle setting.
In Germany, no maximum period is prescribed. However: With advanced age, the rubber compound hardens further and becomes brittle. The tire thus loses its positive properties. Regular checks are therefore recommended from the age of 6.
Information on the suitable wheel/tire combination and tire size can be found in your vehicle registration document. Here is the right dimension that you can mount on your vehicle. In addition, you can use our VIN search to find the right complete wheel set or here from our trained automotive professionals.
The specified DOT number of the tires stands for "Department of Transportation", i.e. the date of manufacture and tire age. The four-digit number is printed on the tire sidewall. The code includes the week of production and the year of production. The DOT number is therefore an important criterion when buying used tires and new tires. Example: A tire with DOT 1920 was produced in week 19 of 2020.
Sawtooth formation means that the tread blocks of the tire wear at an angle. These are usually located on the outside of a tire. The sawtooth formation only has an effect on driving behavior in very few cases. Sawtooth formation is often caused by incorrect air pressure in the tires or by incorrect axle settings on the vehicle. However, this is neutralized again after a few kilometers when the tire pressure is corrected.
At high speeds on summer roads, winter tires are exposed to a much higher thermal load than summer tires. The treads of the summer tires are equipped with a heat-resistant tread compound to withstand these extreme demands.
The dismantled parts are only stored and sold if they meet our precisely defined quality criteria. Our quality classes are divided into A and B quality and vary in their requirements depending on the product group.
