Winter vs. summer

How can you tell the difference between summer tyres and winter tyres?

In warmer conditions, the tread on summer tyres provides extensive contact with the road surface. This not only improves your driving safety, but also ensures a shorter braking distance, precise steering and better handling of the vehicle.
Better for the environment: lower fuel consumption, low noise, less abrasion. As summer tyres have a harder rubber compound than winter tyres, rolling resistance is lower. As a result, the tyres have less abrasion, a lower noise level and significantly lower fuel consumption. However, the summer tyres still cover important properties for bad conditions: the tread is also adapted for aquaplaning, so the better grip in longitudinal and lateral directions ensures more driving stability.

Tyre labelling

How to read summer tyres

Car tyres from different manufacturers have different designations and imprints or symbols. That is why tyres have a tyre label. This provides information about the tyre's various characteristics in the form of numbers, letters and symbols. Not only the tyre marking provides information about your permissible wheel/tyre combination, but also your vehicle documents. The markings on the tyre wall contain the most important data about the tyre. And what do they mean?

How much tread must the summer tyre have?

As soon as the temperatures rise above seven degrees Celsius for a longer period in spring, the winter tyres should be replaced by summer tyres. A minimum tread depth of 1.6 millimetres applies to tyres in Germany. Since worn tyres endanger braking performance, we recommend checking the tread depth regularly. Our tyres are available in quality A as well as quality B in different tread depths and manufacturing data or even as new.

Quality A means:

✓ Age (DOT) up to 4 years
✓ Tread depth from 6.0 mm
✓ Tread condition: normal traces of usage

Quality B means:
✓ Age (DOT) up to 6 years
✓ Tread depth 4.0 to 5.9 mm
✓ Tread condition: normal traces of usage

Frequently asked questions

All questions about our summer tyres.

In Germany there is a situational winter tyre obligation, according to which the tyres must be adapted to the weather conditions. The rule of thumb is to change to winter tyres from October to Easter. As soon as the temperatures rise above seven degrees Celsius for a longer period in spring, the winter tyres should be replaced by summer tyres.

A statutory minimum tread depth of 1.6 millimetres applies to all tyres.
No, we do not buy wheels, tires or rims from individuals.
The summer tyre may wear out after about six to seven years. Sufficient tread depth and the age of the tyre (DOT*) are decisive for the service life. However, the durability can be influenced by numerous factors such as: Driving style, mileage, air pressure, tyre model, bearing or axle setting.
There is no maximum period prescribed in Germany. However: With advanced age, the rubber compound will harden and becomes more brittle. This means that the tyre loses its positive properties. Therefore, regular checks are recommended from the age of 6 years.
Information on the suitable wheel/tyre combination and tyre size can be found in your vehicle registration document. This indicates the suitable dimension that you can fit on your vehicle. You can also use our VIN search to find the suitable complete wheel set or ask here our trained automotive professionals for advice.
The DOT number of the tyres stands for “Department of Transportation”, i.e. the date of manufacture and the tyre age. The four-digit number is printed on the tyre sidewall. The code contains the production week and the production year. The DOT number is therefore an important criterion when buying used tyres and new tyres. Example: a tyre with DOT 1920 was produced in week 19 in 2020.
Heel and toe wear is a slanted wear of the tire's tread blocks. These are usually located on the outer sidewalls of a tyre. Heel and toe wear only has an effect on driving behaviour in very few cases. Heel and toe wear is often caused by incorrect air pressures in the tyres or by incorrect axle settings on the vehicle. However, this is neutralised again after a few kilometres when the tyre pressure is corrected.
At high speed on summer roads, winter tyres are exposed to much higher thermal stress than summer tyres. The tyre treads of the summer tyres are equipped with a heat-resistant tyre tread compound to cope with these extreme stresses.
Only if the dismantled parts meet our precisely defined quality criteria they are stored and sold. Our quality classes are divided into A and B quality and vary in their requirements depending on the product group.
