Complete winter wheels vs. winter tyres - What is the difference?
Are winter tyres and complete winter wheels actually the same thing? No, because the term "winter tyres" only describes the tyres of the vehicle without rims. When you talk about a "tyre change", a new set of winter tyres is mounted on the existing rim. Complete wheels for winter, on the other hand, are sets of 4 winter tyres and 4 matching rims - suitable for your Mercedes-Benz or smart. A complete wheel change, for example from summer to winter wheels, therefore includes the replacement of the entire wheel - i.e. the tyres and the rim.
Winter vs. summer
How can you tell the difference between winter and summer tyres?
Winter tyres that are approved for winter road conditions have the so-called Alpine symbol. The Alpine symbol is mandatory for all winter tyres. You can also recognise this by the different tread properties. Summer tyres are significantly harder than winter tyres. The winter tyre tread is characterised by sipes to prevent slipping on snow. Due to the soft tread compound, the winter tyre is thus still flexible even at low temperatures, so that they remain grippy and adapt optimally to the road surface.
How much tread must the winter complete wheel sets have?
The minimum tread depth for tyres is 1.6 millimetres. Since worn tyres endanger braking performance, we recommend checking the tread depth regularly. Our tyres are available in quality A as well as quality B in different tread depths and manufacturing data or even as new.
Quality A means:
✓ Age (DOT) up to 4 years
✓ Tread depth from 6.0 mm
✓
Quality B means:
✓ Age (DOT) up to 6 years
✓ Tread depth 4.0 to 5.9 mm
✓ Tread condition: normal wear marks
Tyre labelling
How to read winter tyres
Car tyres from different manufacturers have different designations and imprints or symbols. That is why tyres have a tyre label. This provides information about the tyre's various characteristics in the form of numbers, letters and symbols. Not only the tyre marking provides information about your permissible wheel/tyre combination, but also your vehicle documents. The inscriptions on the tyre sidewall contain the most important data about the tyre. And what do they mean?
